Bangkok: PTT Oil and Retail Business Public Company Limited (OR) has partnered with Bangkok Airways Public Company Limited (PG) to initiate the use of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) produced in Thailand for the first time on international commercial flights departing from Suvarnabhumi Airport since July 1. This collaboration marks a significant milestone in advancing the Thai aviation sector towards a more sustainable and environmentally conscious future.
According to Thai News Agency, the project began after a Letter of Intent (LOI) was signed on May 8, signifying the purchase of domestically produced SAF for Bangkok Airways’ international routes. This strategic partnership underscores the combined efforts of OR, a leader in aviation fuel market, and Bangkok Airways, a prominent airline in the Asia-Pacific region, in supporting Thailand’s Net Zero ambitions and global aviation sustainability goals.
The SAF used in the initiative is manufactured by PTT Global Chemical Public Company Limited (GC) using a Co-Processing method that converts used cooking oil (UCO) into clean fuel. This innovative approach is both environmentally friendly and resource-efficient. Bangkok Airways is set to use a fuel blend containing 1% SAF, amounting to a total of 5,000,000 liters, for its flights from Bangkok to various international destinations. Furthermore, this pilot marks the first deployment of SAF at Suvarnabhumi Airport. The initiative has received a full Proof of Sustainability (POS) certificate, enabling the airline to record its carbon reduction efforts in alignment with the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) framework.
