Paethongtarn Shares Update on Thaksin Shinawatra’s Health and Spirits

Bangkok: Paethongtarn, after visiting her father Thaksin Shinawatra, reported that the former Prime Minister is in good spirits and remains strong, despite the challenges he faces. She mentioned that Thaksin, who has cut his hair short, met with his family through a mirror after 17 years of separation, highlighting the complexities of their family life.

According to Thai News Agency, following a brief 30-minute visit with Thaksin, Khunying Potjaman left the prison and was quickly ushered into a van by a group of red-shirt supporters who expressed their continued support for the Shinawatra family. Ms. Paethongtarn, alongside Ms. Pinthongtha, addressed the media, sharing that her father had been encouraging and mentally resilient despite fluctuating blood pressure. She expressed gratitude for the widespread support received from the public.

Attorney Winyat provided further details, stating that the prison commander allowed the first visit after a week of detention, with no special privileges extended to Thaksin. He is currently housed in the nursing unit for the elderly, managing chronic health issues, including his blood pressure. Winyat emphasized that all visits adhere to standard regulations, with meetings conducted through glass, ensuring no preferential treatment.

It was noted that supporters, known as Red Shirts, continue to gather outside the prison, with plans for a communal meal event on Saturday. Addressing rumors regarding assets in Cambodia, Winyat stated that these claims are under investigation, but they remain a private family matter.

Attorney Winyat clarified that the family has not requested any treatment beyond what is available to other inmates. He emphasized that any news to the contrary is unfounded and urged for accountability in reporting. Wishing Thaksin well, he reiterated the former Prime Minister’s concern for the nation’s well-being.
