“People’s Democratic Reform Committee” Proposes Budget Cuts for 2026

Bangkok: The People’s Democratic Reform Committee has introduced four proposals aimed at reducing unnecessary budget allocations for 2026. Mr. Phrits Wacharasindhu, along with Ms. Sirikanya Tansakul and Ms. Rakchanok Srinok of the Prachachon Party, emphasized the importance of scrutinizing budget allocations to ensure efficiency and transparency.

According to Thai News Agency, the committee’s proposals focus on setting a clear budget reduction target, holding ministers accountable for explaining budget allocations, broadcasting budget committee meetings live for public access, and ensuring that budget information is provided in an easily analyzable format. These measures are intended to streamline budget processes and eliminate redundant projects.

Ms. Sirikanya highlighted the potential for cutting up to 50 billion baht by targeting unnecessary and potentially corrupt projects. She emphasized the need to prioritize essential projects and consider deferring non-urgent initiatives, especially in the event of a crisis. The possibility of achieving a 100 billion baht reduction was also discussed, contingent on government cooperation and prioritization.

Mr. Phrits underscored the need for transparency within the House of Representatives, noting the importance of scrutinizing its budget to maintain legitimacy in overseeing other agencies’ spending. He pointed out a 120 million baht renovation project for a conference room as an example of potentially unnecessary expenditure.

Ms. Rakchanok expressed her intention to propose herself as a vice president for the budget committee, aiming to bring a fresh perspective to the role. Meanwhile, Ms. Sirikanya confirmed that this would be the only position the Prachachon Party seeks to fill.
