Bangkok: Pheu Thai Party is urging the government to maintain the universal flood relief of 9,000 baht for every household and expedite the construction of bunkers along the northeastern border. Mr. Chanin Rungthanakiat, deputy spokesperson for the Pheu Thai Party, highlighted the importance of continuing these initiatives despite the change in government.
According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Chanin held a press conference calling on the Bhumjaithai Party-led government to approve a relief package for flood victims affected by Tropical Storm Bualoi. The proposal includes a uniform relief payment of no less than 9,000 baht per household, aligning with criteria previously established by the Pheu Thai Party cabinet.
Mr. Chanin mentioned that Deputy Prime Minister Sophon Saram plans to propose an adjustment to the current flood compensation payments, consolidating them to a flat rate of 9,000 baht regardless of damage level. This proposal is set to be presented to the Cabinet for consideration on October 14th.
He emphasized the need for the relief amount to reflect current economic conditions, taking into account increased costs for home repair and living expenses. Mr. Chanin expressed hope for swift government action to approve and distribute the funds efficiently to affected citizens.
Mr. Chanin also addressed the budget allocation during Ms. Paethongtarn’s tenure as acting Prime Minister. The budget of 1.7 billion baht, approved by Mr. Phumtham Wechayachai from the central budget, was intended for constructing bomb shelters and radio towers and for aiding victims of conflicts along the Thai-Cambodian border. However, he noted that compensation payments to border victims had been delayed, impacting 247,257 households, with some not receiving funds due to registration issues. He urged the government to resolve these problems promptly.
Additionally, Mr. Chanin stressed the necessity of completing the construction of bunkers in high-risk areas, as approved by the previous government, to ensure public safety amid border uncertainties. He called on the government to prioritize these projects to maintain citizens’ confidence and security.
Mr. Chanin concluded by stating that the budget for these projects should not be viewed politically but as a critical public safety issue. The Pheu Thai Party is advocating for efficient implementation of these initiatives, regardless of their origins under the previous administration.
