Phumtham Calls for Amendment of Sangha Law to Address Monastic Misconduct

Bangkok: Phumtham Wechayachai, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior, emphasized the necessity to amend the Sangha law in response to recent issues concerning monks’ misconduct. He revealed that the Supreme Patriarch has mandated decisive measures to address defamatory acts committed by monks. Phumtham has already discussed the matter with Minister Suchart and plans to collaborate with relevant authorities to ensure strict oversight on the issue, which he considers a matter for the entire Sangha Council.

According to Thai News Agency, Phumtham, acting as the Prime Minister, paid a visit to religious leaders on the occasion of the Buddhist Lent Festival. During this visit, he discussed the situation with the Supreme Patriarch, who expressed concern over the incident. Phumtham highlighted that within the religious framework, penalties, such as resignation, are already outlined for serious offenses. He mentioned that an amendment to the law might be necessary. He spoke about recent discussions with Phra Maha Wirawong, who advocated for firm action regardless of those involved. Phumtham stressed his commitment to resolving the issue, seeking ways to enhance the existing monastic law by increasing enforcement powers and penalties. He assured that once the process is complete, he will inform the Supreme Sangha Council.

Phumtham also conveyed his conversation with Mr. Suchart Tancharoen, who oversees the National Office of Buddhism, emphasizing the need for coordination among responsible authorities to address the problem effectively. He acknowledged that while the issue was personal, it had broader implications for the religion. Phumtham noted the increasing violence in society and the need for vigilant monitoring of such incidents, considering it a collective responsibility of the Sangha. When questioned about potential non-cooperation from the Buddhist Office due to the involvement of a high-ranking monk, Phumtham denied any such reluctance, reaffirming his intention to deal decisively with the matter.
