Phumtham Confident in Talks with Cambodia over Bok Channel Dispute

Bangkok: Mr. Phumtham Vejjayachai, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defense of Thailand, addressed the ongoing territorial dispute with Cambodia over the Chong Bok area, emphasizing that discussions will proceed at the Joint Boundary Commission (JBC) forum, hosted by Cambodia. He maintained that the region in question is Thai territory but acknowledged that Cambodia has laid its claim over it.

According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Phumtham discussed the statements of Samdech Hun Sen, who claims the Chong Bok area for Cambodia. Mr. Phumtham asserted Thailand’s stance that the area is historically Thai and indicated efforts to protect Thai sovereignty. He acknowledged the complexities in reaching a resolution and expressed the necessity of developing joint solutions for contentious areas.

Thailand is actively asserting its rights, and Mr. Phumtham underscored the importance of negotiation over confrontation. He noted that initial successes have been achieved without conflict, stressing the need to avoid escalation that could lead to violence.

Mr. Phumtham thanked the Assistant Military Attache of the Royal Thai Army in Cambodia for ongoing coordination efforts, which facilitated dialogue involving Major General Sompop Pharawet and led to a reduction in tensions. The meeting between the two nations resulted in a decision to return forces to their original positions in 2024 and to conduct joint patrols, fostering a conducive environment for peaceful discussions.

The JBC meeting between Thailand and Cambodia is confirmed to take place, with technical discussions led by key Thai officials. General Songwit Noonpakdee and others will serve as advisors, with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs organizing the delegation. The meeting aims to address the Chong Bok clashes and future cooperative measures.

Border measures remain under review, with Thailand signaling its preparedness to escalate should progress stall. Mr. Phumtham assured that only the Channel Bok area would be discussed at the JBC meeting, as it is the focal point of current tensions. He expressed optimism that the Thai and Cambodian representatives are clear on their discussion points.

Mr. Phumtham concluded by emphasizing the improving situation at the Thai-Cambodian border, urging caution and a commitment to peace in ongoing negotiations. He acknowledged the challenges faced by border communities and the importance of preventing conflict for their safety. When asked about strategies to persuade Cambodia, he humorously deflected, stating that such tactics are better left unspoken in public forums.
