Bangkok: Phumtham Vejjayachai, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defense of Thailand, addressed recent claims made by the Cambodian Prime Minister, Hun Manet, regarding the status of the border crossing between the two countries. Phumtham clarified that Thailand did not request the opening of the border, as it was never closed, merely subject to a time-limit arrangement.
According to Thai News Agency, the Cambodian leader had posted on Facebook, suggesting that Thailand had requested coordination to open the border checkpoint and had even released documents from the Burapha Force, implying that Thailand should initiate the opening. However, Phumtham emphasized that the checkpoint was operational, allowing some border trade, and was not in a state of lockdown. He reiterated Thailand’s commitment to maintaining peace and facilitating negotiations between the two countries.
Phumtham further elaborated on the distinction between governmental issues and the well-being of the citizens, stressing that Thailand continues to support humanitarian assistance, such as permitting students and individuals with emergencies to enter. He urged Cambodia to address its internal challenges with discretion and wisdom, reiterating that Thailand is not seeking involvement with the World Court, and that the Thai military has already clarified the situation regarding the border checkpoint.
In response to concerns about potential impacts from Cambodia’s refusal to open its side of the border to goods vehicles, Phumtham assured that there would be no adverse effects. He stated that Thailand is focused on minimizing disruptions for its citizens and business operators, and any decision by Cambodia not to reciprocate is a matter for Cambodia to consider independently.
