Phumtham Opens Village Defense Volunteers’ Event in Sisaket: No Political Agenda

Sisaket: Phumtham Vejjayachai, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior, visited Sisaket to inaugurate the Village Defense Volunteers’ Association event, asserting that the visit held no political significance and was unrelated to the by-election. He emphasized his role as acting prime minister and minister of interior, stating that he was fulfilling his duties and not engaging in any political maneuvering.

According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Phumtham addressed questions about the political implications of his visit, suggesting that inquiries should be directed to Mr. Anutin Charnvirakul, the former Minister of Interior, who organized the event. Although initially considering a change in location, he decided against it due to budgetary constraints and affirmed his commitment to his ministerial responsibilities.

Regarding the by-election in Constituency 5, a Pheu Thai Party stronghold, Mr. Phumtham mentioned that he might visit the area to support the campaign, but only if it aligns with legal guidelines and fits within his schedule. He clarified that any campaign activities would occur outside of office hours.

When questioned about his potential involvement in campaigning during holidays, Mr. Phumtham stated that no definitive plans were in place, as the ministry’s ongoing work, particularly concerning drug issues, took precedence. He acknowledged the importance of every vote for political parties, especially in a narrow government framework.

On the topic of former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra’s involvement in campaigning, Mr. Phumtham deferred, suggesting reporters should directly ask Mr. Thaksin. He also commented on the possibility of future collaboration with the Bhumjaithai Party, noting that while Mr. Thaksin had previously mentioned the need for political compromises, any decisions would depend on the prevailing political climate. He reiterated that the current discourse was exaggerated and that he would address any inappropriate matters decisively.

After his interview, Mr. Phumtham was greeted by General Nattapol Nakphanit, Deputy Minister of Defense, who humorously remarked on Mr. Phumtham’s appearance in the Village Defense Volunteer uniform, highlighting the symbolic lions of both the Ministry of Interior and the Ministry of Defense.
