Phumtham Reaffirms Commitment to Sovereignty Amid Thai-Cambodian Tensions

Bangkok: Phumtham Vejjayachai, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defense, has expressed a strong stance against dismissing the 2nd Army Area Commander despite rising tensions at the Thai-Cambodian border. He criticized the portrayal of Cambodian political leader Hun Sen patting his head, attributing it to AI manipulations aimed at stirring up conflict.

According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Phumtham emphasized that the Thai government, including the army, the Ministry of Defense, and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, has been actively engaged in discussions regarding the border conflict. These discussions involve the National Security Council (NSC) and the highest military authorities to decide on measures such as the closure of border crossings. He mentioned that the government remains committed to the 2000 Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) and believes diplomatic negotiations are crucial.

Mr. Phumtham highlighted the 2nd Army’s preparedness to protect national sovereignty amidst tensions. He urged against politicizing the issue, citing recent provocations by political figures. He reiterated the importance of unity and cooperation in addressing the situation.

Furthermore, Mr. Phumtham announced his plans to visit the 2nd Army Area to boost morale. He stressed that decisions regarding war and peace are made in Bangkok, urging careful consideration to avoid unnecessary violence. He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to peace and negotiation, emphasizing the need to minimize conflict.

Mr. Phumtham reassured the public of the government’s dedication to maintaining national sovereignty and borders, dismissing any notion of violence. He questioned the dismissal of Lt. Gen. Boonsin Phadklang, affirming his performance and dismissing AI-generated provocations involving Hun Sen.

He addressed concerns about Cambodia’s adherence to agreements, stating that ongoing discussions aim for peaceful resolutions. The Joint Boundary Committee (JBC) meeting between Thailand and Cambodia is scheduled for June 14 in Phnom Penh. Mr. Phumtham downplayed strong statements from Hun Sen on social media, emphasizing the priority of national interests and peaceful means to resolve conflicts.
