Phumtham Reiterates MOU43 Agreement for Adjusting Forces in Chong Bok Conflict Zone

Bangkok: Mr. Phumtham Wechayachai, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defense, addressed claims made by Mr. Somchai Srisutthiyakorn regarding a supposed agreement allowing Cambodian soldiers to station at Ta Muen Thom Temple. He emphasized that the MOU43 agreement would be used to adjust forces in the conflict area of Chong Bok and stressed that opening and closing the border should occur simultaneously. He also requested that the scammer problem and border issues be treated as separate matters.

According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Phumtham clarified that Cambodia’s claim to Ta Muen Thom Temple is an existing conflict, and the matter has been submitted to the International Court of Justice. He refuted Mr. Somchai’s allegations, stating he did not sign any consent for Cambodian soldiers to stay at the temple. The MOU43 agreement serves as the framework for bilateral patrols and cooperation. Mr. Phumtham assured that Thailand operates through peaceful bilateral mechanisms, with ongoing discussions at various levels, including the Joint Boundary Commission (JBC) and Regional Border Conference (RBC).

Regarding Cambodia’s proposal to open the border, Mr. Phumtham stated that Thailand wishes to reduce confrontations and adjust forces simultaneously. He clarified that any border opening must occur concurrently on both sides. Discussions are ongoing with relevant agencies, and Thailand has proposed simultaneous force adjustments, particularly in the Chong Bok area. Mr. Phumtham highlighted the importance of maintaining peace and avoiding violence. He emphasized that the opening and closing of checkpoints rely on RBC negotiations.

Mr. Phumtham urged for factual information in addressing international conflicts, stressing that Thailand, being a larger country, must be careful not to invade others. He reiterated that Thailand’s proposal involves adjusting forces and removing heavy weapons to original positions. The border issue is being managed by a dedicated Thai team, ensuring peace and non-violence. Mr. Phumtham also noted that media narratives, such as “Cambodia is closed,” should not overshadow diplomatic efforts and negotiations.
