Phumtham Urges Patience Amidst Cambodia’s Provocative Actions

Bangkok: Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior, Mr. Phumtham Vejjayachai, acting prime minister, addressed the recent tensions at Prasat Ta Muen Thom in Surin province, expressing dissatisfaction with Cambodia’s actions. He urged both the Thai public and military to exercise patience and restraint in response to provocations, advising against heeding statements from “Hun Sen,” as the Cambodian leader lacks the authority to resolve the situation.

According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Phumtham commented on the incident, stating that it was a provoked situation he had hoped to avoid. He emphasized the importance of caution and tolerance among Thai officials to prevent further conflicts, which could be exploited in international affairs. Mr. Phumtham assured that Thai soldiers are committed to avoiding the use of force and being accused of inciting violence. Regarding Prasat Ta Muen Thom, specific deterrent measures are already in place, with certain areas under strict control by the commander of the 2nd Army.

Addressing concerns about potential escalations, Mr. Phumtham highlighted the importance of preventing incidents that could incite hatred, particularly among Thai citizens living near the border and soldiers. He noted that diplomatic measures, including recalling ambassadors, are being considered as severe responses to Cambodia’s actions. Mr. Phumtham criticized Mr. Hun Sen’s credibility on the international stage, indicating that recent international meetings did not prioritize Cambodia’s actions, reflecting a lack of trust from other countries.

Mr. Phumtham clarified that Mr. Hun Sen, despite holding the position of Senate President, lacked the power to negotiate and resolve the issue. He emphasized that official communications would be directed towards Mr. Hun Manet, as Mr. Hun Sen does not hold the ultimate leadership position required for negotiations. Mr. Phumtham assured that the Thai government is managing the situation to protect national sovereignty and will take decisive action if necessary.

He concluded by urging the Thai people to remain patient, emphasizing the government’s commitment to addressing the issue without compromising the country’s interests or sovereignty. Mr. Phumtham reiterated that the government will not tolerate any actions that threaten Thailand’s position and will act decisively if required.
