Bangkok: “Pichet” Chueamuangphan, the First Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, has expressed his readiness to face an investigation after the People’s Party announced plans to file a complaint with the Constitutional Court, alleging a violation of Section 144. The controversy centers around accusations of improper budget management for field trips, with Mr. Pichet maintaining there has been no such budget transfer and asserting that the amount in question, 8 billion baht, is relatively minor compared to ministerial budgets.
According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Pichet addressed the issue during discussions about a scheduled tour of the parliamentary building intended to clarify the budget requests for various renovations. Despite inviting Mr. Parit Wacharasindhu and Mr. Phanthil Nuamchim, both MPs from the People’s Party, to participate, Mr. Pichet noted that their absence led to the cancellation of the tour. He emphasized his openness to scrutiny and urged the MPs to assess the necessity of the budget without politicizing the matter.
Mr. Pichet, responding to questions about the MPs’ absence, stated that the truth should prevail over speculation. He highlighted the thorough scrutiny the House budget underwent before its approval and underscored the importance of maintaining the legislative body’s dignity. Stressing transparency, he welcomed any complaints, emphasizing that the 8 billion baht budget is crucial for the legislative branch’s operations.
Addressing allegations of self-appropriated budget adjustments, Mr. Pichet insisted on the legitimacy and necessity of every budgetary decision. He reiterated the importance of legislative institutions in the country’s democratic framework, arguing that their budget is minimal compared to other governmental bodies.
Mr. Pichet also commented on potential Budget Committee inquiries, expressing reluctance to personally explain the allocations due to the structural differences between the House and other government departments. He criticized media narratives that could damage the legislative institution’s reputation and expressed his willingness to clarify matters.
Regarding the People’s Party’s anticipated submission under Article 144 of the Constitution, Mr. Pichet conveyed his willingness to cooperate with any investigations, refuting accusations of personal budgetary gain. He maintained that all processes were conducted appropriately and transparently.
Finally, Mr. Pichet dismissed notions of political maneuvering, affirming his commitment to public service and the legislative institution’s integrity. He invited scrutiny of the budget allocation, confident in the process’s integrity and his intentions.
