Bangkok: "Pirapan" has ordered the establishment of an energy emergency center to address the tensions between Thailand and Cambodia, with an emphasis on ensuring that 'oil and electricity' remain in steady supply. However, for safety precautions, gas stations near the conflict zones on the border have been instructed to temporarily cease operations.
According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Pirapan Salirathavibhaga, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Energy, has convened an urgent meeting with senior executives of the Ministry of Energy. The meeting aimed to prepare for the potential impacts of the emergency situation along the Thai-Cambodian border and devise strategies to mitigate energy distress for residents in the affected areas. Mr. Pirapan has mandated the creation of an 'Energy Emergency Management Center' tasked with monitoring the situation and directing agencies and officials within the Ministry of Energy. The center will also coordinate with other relevant agencies to prevent and address any energy issues that may arise due to the actions of the Kingdom of Cambodia, impacting provinces like Ubon Ratchathani, Si Sa Ket, Surin, and Buriram.
Mr. Pirapan emphasized the Ministry of Energy's commitment to alleviating the hardships faced by people in the affected regions and maintaining energy security, specifically regarding oil and electricity. In line with this, petrol stations near the border clash points have been ordered to suspend service temporarily for the safety of officials and the public. Conversely, petrol stations in neighboring districts and provinces outside the risk zones have been instructed to maintain regular operations to support essential travel and emergency missions, ensuring that services like ambulances and security vehicles have uninterrupted access to fuel.
Regarding the electrical system, the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand has been designated as the primary coordinator with the Provincial Electricity Authority. They are tasked with setting up maintenance teams in the area to prepare for any potential damage to the electrical system or transmission lines due to the conflict, ensuring the system can be restored swiftly to minimize any disruption to people's lives.
The 'Energy Emergency Management Center' will also include an operational team comprising civil servants and officials from the Ministry of Energy and related agencies. This team will focus on monitoring the situation, addressing incidents, and resolving issues to prevent any energy-related impact on the public. They will also provide necessary support in terms of personnel, materials, equipment, and tools.
