PM Highlights AI Governance at GFEAI 2025 Conference in Bangkok

Bangkok: The Prime Minister inaugurated the GFEAI 2025 conference, emphasizing the need to prevent artificial intelligence from disseminating false information and posing cyber threats that could erode public trust and democratic values. He advocated for technology to support rather than replace human labor and proposed establishing Asia’s first regional AI governance center to address emerging threats.

According to Thai News Agency, Ms. Paethongtarn Shinawatra, the Prime Minister, delivered a keynote address at the 3rd UNESCO Global Forum on the Ethics of Artificial Intelligence in 2025 (GFEAI 2025), held under the theme ‘AI Ethical Governance in Action.’ The forum aims to enhance Thailand’s role in global AI discussions and promote ethical AI practices.

The event saw participation from key figures, including Mr. Prasert Chantarawongthong, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Digital Economy and Society, as well as UNESCO leaders Ms. Audrey Azoulay and Ms. Lydia Arthur Brito. The Prime Minister highlighted the shared goal of steering technology as a positive force for humanity and lauded UNESCO’s efforts to unify its member countries in ethical AI development.

The Prime Minister outlined three guiding principles for AI’s future benefits: leveraging AI’s potential for solving critical issues like water management and personalized learning, preventing AI misuse through disinformation and cyber threats, and ensuring AI supports human labor rather than replacing it. He stressed the importance of collaboration among government, industry, and academia to upskill workers and preserve human labor’s value.

Thailand’s commitment to AI advancement is underscored by the National AI Action Plan Committee’s four key initiatives: developing a skilled AI workforce, investing over 15.4 billion US dollars in infrastructure, promoting AI applications in key sectors, and establishing the AI Governance Practice Center to foster best practices.

The Prime Minister reiterated that AI should be a force for truth and progress, not deception and fear. He expressed Thailand’s readiness to collaborate with global partners to create an ethical and equitable AI future.

Following the opening ceremony, Ms. Audrey Azoulay, UNESCO’s Director-General, met with the Prime Minister during her visit to the GFEAI 2025. The conference, held for the first time in Thailand, aims to promote AI’s responsible use in line with UNESCO’s guidelines and runs from June 24-27, 2025, in Bangkok. The event is co-hosted by Thailand’s Ministry of Digital Economy and Society, Ministry of Education, and Ministry of Higher Education, Science, Research and Innovation, in collaboration with UNESCO.
