Prime Minister Paethongtarn’s Request for Court Extension Criticized by Somchai

Bangkok: “Somchai” criticized Prime Minister Paethongtarn Shinawatra’s request for an extension of time to explain to the court, suggesting it is a strategic move to negotiate and delay proceedings.

According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Somchai Srisutthiyakorn, an academic and former Election Commission member, highlighted that the Prime Minister’s Secretary-General explained that Prime Minister Paethongtarn had sent a letter requesting an additional 15 days to clarify matters to the Constitutional Court. This request pertains to an audio clip of her discussion with Hun Sen, which she claims she could not address in time due to unprepared documents. Somchai noted that this case carries technical political implications, and the extension might allow her more time in office while potentially enabling negotiations with authorities to resolve the situation.

Somchai further indicated that the administrative implications reveal shortcomings in the administrative mechanism under Prime Minister Paethongtarn’s leadership. Despite having access to the legal department and the Prime Minister’s Office officials, she has not managed to compile the necessary documents to clarify the 17-minute audio clip within the 15-day period.

Additionally, Somchai commented on the political responsibility implications, emphasizing that the Prime Minister’s suspension from duties causes damage due to the absence of a real Prime Minister leading the country. He urged for prompt cooperation in submitting a statement to the Constitutional Court to restore normalcy efficiently. Somchai criticized the delay as selfish and lacking political responsibility, stressing that swift action is required to ensure the country is not perpetually managed by an acting Prime Minister.
