Bangkok: The Royal Thai Army has implemented new measures to restrict border crossings between Thailand and Cambodia, with the primary focus on enhancing safety procedures for people residing along the border. This initiative reflects the Army’s commitment to maintaining national sovereignty and ensuring the security of citizens in these regions.
According to Thai News Agency, the measures, which have been in effect since June 7, 2015, at 7:00 p.m., involve controlling the opening and closing times of all border crossings. Major General Winthai Suvari, the spokesperson for the Royal Thai Army, announced that these measures are aligned with the National Security Council’s resolutions and are intended to prevent unauthorized travel, particularly for gambling or tourism purposes. The implementation includes specific opening and closing hours for various checkpoints, with restrictions on certain types of vehicles and limitations on the duration of valid travel documents.
The Burapha Force is responsible for several key border checkpoints, including the Ban Khlong Luek Permanent Border Checkpoint in Aranyaprathet District, Sa Kaeo Province, and the Thai-Cambodian Friendship Bridge in Nong Eian-Stung Bot. These checkpoints have adjusted their operating hours to 8:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m., focusing on trade and work travel, while prohibiting trucks with six wheels or more from passing through.
In addition, the Ban Khao Din crossing in Klong Hat District and the Ban Ta Phraya Trade Relaxation Point in Ta Phraya District have imposed similar restrictions. These points allow passage only for trade or work, and the validity of Border Pass/Passport documents is limited to seven days.
The Suranaree Forces oversee other significant crossings, such as the Chong An Ma and Chong Sai Taku trade relaxation points, with specific days and times designated for operations. These points permit the exchange of essential consumer goods under strict regulations, and vehicle passage is prohibited. Humanitarian assistance is allowed only in accordance with international principles.
Furthermore, the Chanthaburi and Trat Border Defense Command of the Royal Thai Navy has set the operating hours for border crossings in its jurisdiction from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., based on the necessity for trade, livelihood, and international humanitarian aid.
Currently, the border measures are in Stage 1 and Stage 2, and no border crossings have been entirely closed, except for natural channels affected by environmental and security threats. The Army has noted an increase in the Cambodian military presence along the border, which poses potential risks to the safety of both Thai and Cambodian residents.
The public is encouraged to stay informed through official channels such as the Royal Thai Army website and its social media platforms to avoid misinformation. The Royal Thai Army reassures citizens that all operations are conducted under the government’s policies, with a priority on the safety and security of people in the border areas.
