Royal Thai Army Urgently Seeks Public Donations for Concertina Wire to Enhance Border Security

Bangkok: The Royal Thai Army has clarified its recent call for public donations of barbed wire, citing an urgent need to bolster security and prevent illegal border crossings by Cambodian soldiers. Despite having adequate funds, the army faces delays in the procurement process which could take up to a month.

According to Thai News Agency, Army spokesperson Major General Winthai Suvari explained that the Second Army Region’s request for “concert wire” donations is driven by immediate safety concerns and the need to secure the border areas of Ubon Ratchathani, Sisaket, Surin, and Buriram. Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior Bhumtham Wechayachai had earlier urged the Second Army Area Command to seek government resources rather than public contributions. However, Maj. Gen. Winthai emphasized that while funds are available, the legal procurement process is time-consuming, potentially leading to rule violations if not followed.

Maj. Gen. Winthai further elaborated that though the military’s procurement must align with governmental regulations, special procurement methods still require significant time. The concertina wire needed by the army is not readily available in the market and necessitates manufacturing, adding to the delay. He reassured that the issue is not budget-related, as there are sufficient funds, but a matter of timing.

The spokesperson stressed that concertina wire is essential for creating barriers in certain areas to protect personnel and prevent unauthorized movement. While civilians have previously offered supplies, the army expressed gratitude but requested a pause in donations unless absolutely necessary. Maj. Gen. Winthai confirmed that food and other essentials are adequate, with the focus remaining on acquiring tactical equipment swiftly through public support to circumvent lengthy government processes.

He reiterated that the government is actively working on providing appropriately sized materials, and while the budget supports ongoing needs, immediate public contributions of commonly used concertina wire can serve as a temporary measure in emergencies.
