Royal Thai Navy Commander Proposes Demolition or Handover of Casino on Disputed Border

Chanthaburi: The Royal Thai Navy Commander has proposed that the casino building located on the contentious Thai-Cambodian border be either demolished or handed over to Thailand for its use. The Commander asserted that the land in question is unequivocally Thai territory and should not be considered a claimable area.

According to Thai News Agency, Admiral Jirapol Wongwit, serving as the Commander-in-Chief of the Royal Thai Navy, addressed the ongoing issue of casinos being constructed in the disputed border regions of Chanthaburi and Trat. These areas are under the jurisdiction of the Royal Thai Navy and have become a point of public concern due to encroachments on territory claimed by Thailand. Admiral Jirapol urged the public to avoid using the term “claimed area,” suggesting instead the term “drawable area.” He chose not to revisit the historical timeline of the issue but emphasized the importance of clarifying the current situation. If encroachment is confirmed, he stated, it is imperative to identify the rightful ownership of the land.

Admiral Jirapol posed a straightforward question to the parties involved: “Will you dismantle it yourself, or would you like us to dismantle it for you? Or if we see it as useful, can you give it to us for use?” He suggested that this approach could serve as a potential solution, provided both parties reach a mutual agreement. Such an agreement would facilitate more straightforward management of the area.

When questioned about his reaction to Cambodia’s apparent reluctance to enter negotiations with Thailand, Admiral Jirapol remarked, “It’s something we have to work on. No matter what happens, we have a clear goal. Whether they’re good or bad, we have to lead them towards our goals, which is important.”
