Yala: Security units have revealed that recent ATM bombings in the southern border provinces were orchestrated by a group with the intent to target property and destabilize the local economy. The attacks, which occurred in nine locations, created chaos and panic among residents late at night on September 1, 2015.
According to Thai News Agency, a press conference was held at the Yala Ruam Jai Conference Room, Royal Thai Police Forward Operations Center, where Lt. Gen. Paisal Nusang, Commander of the Fourth Army Region, along with other key officials, discussed the security challenges faced in the region. The coordinated attacks involved planting bombs at ATMs, placing suspicious objects, and burning tires, all aimed at causing economic disruption.
Pol. Lt. Gen. Piyawat Chalermsri of the Provincial Police Region 9 highlighted that security forces conducted multiple operations, resulting in 15 raids and the detention of 21 suspects. These suspects are linked to major cases, including shootings and bombings across Pattani, Yala, and Narathiwat provinces. Authorities have issued 33 arrest warrants, leading to the arrest of 17 individuals involved in various criminal activities, including attacks on police officers and tourists.
Pol. Maj. Gen. Chumphon Saksuriyamongkol, from the Southern Border Provinces Police, stated that evidence is being gathered for forensic analysis to identify the group responsible for these well-planned attacks. The perpetrators used explosives specifically designed to destroy ATM safes, utilizing remote control detonation. Investigations are ongoing to determine whether this is the work of a new or existing group, with efforts being accelerated to apprehend those involved.
Administrative security agencies have called for enhanced collaboration among local civil society networks to maintain community safety. This includes the integration of district chiefs, village heads, and Village Defense Volunteers in a coordinated effort to monitor vulnerable areas and deploy joint security personnel.
Lt. Gen. Paisal Nusang emphasized the importance of cooperation among military, police, and civilian forces to safeguard government property and public safety. He highlighted the need for vigilance against insurgent groups exploiting security gaps. Authorities are committed to pursuing perpetrators and ensuring justice, while also providing compensation to those affected by the incidents.
