Senate Ethics Committee to Investigate Senator Accused of Sexual Harassment

Bangkok: The Senate Ethics Committee has accepted the case of a senator accused of sexual harassment for consideration. They are preparing to invite both the petitioner and the accused to provide information. Meanwhile, Lawyer Aun Buriram revealed that the senator had stolen property from an accident victim while performing his duties as a rescue volunteer, leading to an indictment by the prosecutor.

According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Suton Klakhalai, a senator and spokesman for the Senate Ethics Committee, stated that the committee has resolved to investigate the matter following a complaint filed against the senator. The investigation will involve inviting relevant witnesses, including the accused senator, to clarify the facts to ensure a fair and comprehensive consideration. If sufficient grounds are found, the committee will proceed with further steps, including assessing the severity of the behavior and presenting their opinions to the Senate as required by law.

Mr. Suton emphasized that the case will be handled with honesty, transparency, and independence to uphold the ethical standards of political institutions and maintain public confidence in the Senate. He also mentioned that while the committee has received documents related to the case, they have not yet set a date for the first consideration.

Regarding whether the accused senator will be invited to provide information, Mr. Suton explained that both the petitioner and the accused will be invited to provide statements through documents or other witnesses. Although a specific time frame has not been established, the process usually takes no more than 30 days but can be extended if necessary.

When questioned about other cases involving senators, Mr. Suton indicated that they are currently under consideration, allowing the petitioner and the accused to clarify their positions. Actions are being taken according to the cases accepted for consideration.

The reporter noted that Mr. Phatthapong Suphakson, also known as Lawyer Aun Buriram, submitted a letter to the committee requesting an investigation into the senator. Mr. Phatthapong mentioned that requests were made last week to investigate the senator for sexual harassment. He further revealed that the senator’s past actions, including stealing property from accident victims while on duty as a rescue volunteer, have been brought to light. The relatives of the victims have informed investigators, and negotiations for compensation have been initiated. It is understood that the public prosecutor has already issued an indictment, suggesting that wrongdoing has occurred, even though the case is not yet concluded. The committee has been urged to investigate this matter thoroughly.
