New york city: A severe storm has impacted the New York metropolitan area, resulting in the deaths of two individuals as flash flooding swept through the region from Monday night into Tuesday. The storm submerged vehicles and caused significant disruptions to subway stations.
According to Thai News Agency, the heavy rain has caused widespread travel disruptions across New Jersey, affecting airports, highways, and rail systems. Video footage captured the extent of the flooding, with water surging through several subway stations, including a dramatic scene at a station on Manhattan’s West Side. Officials noted that the subway infrastructure was overwhelmed by the volume of rain that fell in a short period.
In response to the situation, New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy declared a state of emergency. He reported that two individuals lost their lives in Plainfield when their car was swept away by floodwaters, with their bodies later discovered in the submerged vehicle. Governor Murphy highlighted that some areas received more than 150 millimeters of rain in a brief period, and noted that certain locations experienced flooding for the first time. He attributed the increased frequency and intensity of such extreme weather events to climate change.
