Sisaket By-Election Postponement Considered Amid Border Conflict

Bangkok: The Election Commission of Thailand (ECT) is set to meet tomorrow to deliberate on the potential postponement of the by-election in Constituency 5, Sisaket, due to ongoing Thai-Cambodian border conflicts. The seat in question remains vacant, and the election was initially scheduled for August 10.

According to Thai News Agency, the ECT has been closely monitoring the border situation and is preparing to provide necessary recommendations to prioritize public safety. The focus is on ensuring the safety of voters and officials in the affected area. The Sisaket by-election includes 150 polling stations in Khun Han District and 86 in Phusing District.

In terms of legal procedures, the process follows the Organic Act on the Election of Members of Parliament, Section 102. If voting cannot proceed, district election commissions must designate new polling stations for voters. If this is unfeasible, the ECT will announce a suspension of voting and determine a new election date or issue alternative orders to maintain election integrity.
