Bangkok: ‘Sonthi-Jatuporn’, representing the People’s Network of Patriots and Land Lovers, has formally submitted a letter to the Thai Prime Minister, outlining six crucial points aimed at safeguarding Thai sovereignty amidst escalating tensions with Cambodia.
According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Sondhi Limthongkul, Mr. Jatuporn Promphan, Mr. Weera Somkwamkid, and Professor Panthep Puapongphan spearheaded the initiative, urging the government to take decisive action in response to Cambodian soldiers and civilians allegedly encroaching on Thai territories. The letter emphasizes the need for the government to protect its national sovereignty and security, following accusations from Cambodia of Thai occupation of Cambodian temples, despite these being on Thai soil. In light of the ongoing dispute, Thai authorities have shortened the operational hours of the Thai-Cambodian border checkpoint, impacting casino revenues and prompting a withdrawal of Cambodian forces.
Mr. Sonthi expressed skepticism regarding Cambodia’s tactical retreat, citing their intention to escalate the matter to the World Court. Cambodia’s reliance on a French-drawn map, which deviates by 200 meters from the natural watershed line, further complicates the issue. The People’s Network of Patriots and Land Lovers proposed six measures to counter Cambodia’s claims:
1. The Thai government should reject the authority of the International Court of Justice and decline Cambodia’s request to involve the Court, advocating instead for bilateral negotiations through the Joint Boundary Commission of Thailand-Cambodia (JBC).
2. A formal protest should be issued to the international community, affirming that Prasat Tam Muen Thom, Ta Muen Tod, Prasat Ta Kwai, and Sala Trimuk are within Thai territory.
3. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs should annul the 2000 Memorandum of Understanding, dismissing the unilaterally drawn French map.
4. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs should also cancel the 2001 MOU to revoke the continental shelf line infringing on Thai waters.
5. The JBC negotiations should propose reducing the operating hours of the Thai-Cambodian border checkpoint until Cambodia addresses technological crimes and call center gangs along the border.
6. Should the Thai-Cambodian situation deteriorate, the Thai military should be prepared to declare martial law to protect sovereignty.
Following the submission, Mr. Sonthi and Mr. Jatuporn addressed the public, asserting Cambodia’s insincerity in troop withdrawal and highlighting numerous violations of Thai territory. They urged the government to act swiftly on the six demands, warning of potential mobilization of patriotic forces if the government fails to respond. Mr. Sonthi hinted at the possibility of mass protests to challenge the government, advising observers to await further developments.
