Sukhum Nuansakul Warns of Potential Political Repercussions from Thaksin

Bangkok: Sukhum Nuansakul, the former president of Ramkhamhaeng University, has issued a cautionary note regarding potential backlash from Thaksin Shinawatra, as recent survey results have not been well-received. The warning comes in light of a Mahidol Poll survey that highlights public demand for changes in key ministries, including Defense, Finance, Social Development and Human Security, Agriculture and Cooperatives, and Tourism and Sports.

According to Thai News Agency, Sukhum pointed out that the poll results reflect widespread public sentiment, particularly concerning the Ministry of Defense. The public has expressed dissatisfaction with the Ministry’s pace in addressing issues such as the Thai-Cambodian border situation and perceived misalignment between the government and the military. Despite these concerns, Sukhum anticipates that implementing changes in the cabinet may be challenging due to political considerations, especially given Thaksin’s history of dismissing unfavorable poll results.

Sukhum further elaborated on the complexity of navigating political dynamics, noting that while there is a desire for change within the Interior Ministry, any adjustments could disrupt the current rapport between the Prime Minister and the Interior Minister. He emphasized the delicate balance of power and the necessity for Thaksin to proceed with caution, particularly in light of questions surrounding potential influence over the Prime Minister.

The former university president stressed the importance of strategic thinking in political maneuvers, as the dynamics of power have shifted significantly. He remarked on the diminished influence compared to previous times, suggesting that any decisions moving forward should be made with careful consideration of the broader political landscape.
