Bangkok: The Royal Thai Army has announced its commitment to prosecuting detained Cambodian soldiers under international standards, focusing on charges of illegal immigration.
According to Thai News Agency, Maj. Gen. Winthai Suvari, an army spokesperson, clarified the situation following claims from Cambodian leadership that the soldiers had been abducted. He emphasized that the Royal Thai Army adheres to the principles of military gentlemanliness and treats detained soldiers in accordance with international law. The spokesperson mentioned that the army is preparing to file charges against the soldiers for illegal entry, while other potential charges will be investigated by the relevant authorities.
Maj. Gen. Winthai expressed concerns over the credibility of the news emerging from Cambodia and reiterated Thailand’s commitment to truthfulness. He stressed that detained soldiers are treated with respect and are not viewed as criminals as long as they are performing their duties for their country. He affirmed that the Royal Thai Army follows international rules and regulations in its operations and maintains integrity at all levels, from the military to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the government.
Regarding potential additional charges, such as the violation of Thai sovereignty by carrying firearms, Maj. Gen. Winthai stated that legal proceedings are ongoing and will be conducted within the established legal framework. He highlighted the need to address perceived violence while acknowledging it as a fact that occurred.
In response to Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet’s social media post urging the repatriation of Cambodian soldiers, Maj. Gen. Winthai noted that the process will follow normal legal procedures. He explained that investigators are reviewing the details of the illegal immigration charges, and repatriation cannot proceed until the investigation is complete.
Maj. Gen. Winthai also addressed concerns about Cambodia’s portrayal of the situation, which he suggested could lead to misunderstandings about Thailand’s intentions. He emphasized efforts to communicate the truth and counter any distortions of Thailand’s actions.
