Thai Chamber of Commerce Backs Swift Import of Foreign Workers to Address Labor Shortage

Bangkok: The Thai Chamber of Commerce is advocating for the swift import of foreign workers to tackle the pressing labor shortage in the country. This initiative is in collaboration with the Ministry of Labor, which aims to expedite a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to be presented to the Cabinet this week. The goal is to mitigate the workforce deficit and propel the Thai economy forward.

According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Poj Aramwattananon, Chairman of the Thai Chamber of Commerce and Board of Trade of Thailand, highlighted the urgency of resolving the labor shortage to prevent adverse effects on the country’s economic recovery and growth. The shortage is particularly affecting key sectors such as agriculture, real estate, manufacturing, and services.

Last week, the Thai Chamber of Commerce submitted a letter to Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Pichai Chunhavajira. The letter conveyed concerns and policy suggestions from provincial chambers of commerce, trade associations, and foreign chambers. It noted the return of a significant number of migrant workers, especially Cambodians, to their home countries, exacerbating the labor shortage in various sectors.

In response, the Thai Chamber of Commerce is supporting government efforts to expedite the legal import of foreign workers through MOUs. This approach will ensure that workers receive permits and adhere to Thai law, with potential recruits from countries such as Bangladesh, Nepal, Sri Lanka, and Indonesia. The Ministry of Labor is expected to fast-track this process for Cabinet review within the week to swiftly replace departing workers and address business needs.

Mr. Poj emphasized the importance of labor as a vital component of the Thai economy. He warned that without immediate intervention, sectors like agriculture, manufacturing, and services could suffer, along with overall employment levels. He urged the government to prioritize this issue to support economic stability and assist affected businesses.
