Bangkok: The Royal Thai Armed Forces Headquarters (RTAF) has reported the detention of 20 Cambodian soldiers who surrendered at the Thai-Cambodian border after running out of ammunition. These soldiers have been prosecuted under Thai law, with two requiring medical attention.
According to Thai News Agency, the Center for COVID-19 Situation Administration (CCSA) has confirmed that the border situation remains calm, despite the recent incident. The CCSA is preparing to send a military attach© to gather facts at the border, ensuring no false information is disseminated, unlike actions attributed to Cambodia. Rear Admiral Surasan Kongsiri, spokesman for the Thai-Cambodian Border Situation Administration Center (TCSA), highlighted that both sides remain entrenched, though previous drone activity by Cambodia was noted.
The detained Cambodian soldiers were apprehended in the Chong Sam Tae area of Sisaket Province. They have been charged with illegal entry into Thailand. The two injured soldiers are receiving treatment at Wirawat Yothin Camp Hospital in Surin Province, under close security supervision.
Recent interactions with Malaysian military leaders, such as General Dato’ Mohamad Nizam Jaffar, have underscored the ongoing efforts to manage the border situation. Discussions with Thai and Cambodian leaders align with a ceasefire agreement between the two nations. Thailand has reiterated its commitment to the ceasefire, emphasizing restraint and peaceful resolution, while accusing Cambodia of violating agreements by deploying troops and using landmines.
The ongoing conflict has resulted in casualties and displacement, with statistics indicating 14 deaths and 38 injuries among refugees. In response, the Royal Thai Army has organized morale-boosting performances for affected communities, part of broader efforts to support those impacted by border tensions.
In terms of media communication, the CCSA is enhancing information services to prevent misinformation and distortion. A delegation of military attach©s, diplomats, and media representatives will visit the border area to observe firsthand the situation and its impact. This initiative aims to convey accurate information to the international community, countering claims of Cambodian-initiated attacks on civilian targets.
The Thai government remains open to negotiations with Cambodia, urging adherence to the ceasefire agreement and calling for bilateral talks to resolve the conflict. Meanwhile, efforts continue to aid those affected, with financial support and logistical assistance being prioritized.
The situation in border provinces is being closely monitored, with local authorities coordinating relief efforts. The government has allocated significant funds to support affected communities, with donations being organized through official channels. Machinery and vehicles have been deployed to assist in maintaining peace and providing essential services to displaced residents.
For further assistance, citizens can contact local authorities or the Damrongtham Center to ensure comprehensive care and support during this challenging time.
