Thai Prime Minister Discusses Thai-Cambodian Border Issue, Reaffirms Peaceful Resolution Principles

Bangkok: The Prime Minister has initiated a discussion to evaluate the situation at the Thai-Cambodian border, emphasizing adherence to principles of peace and confirming that Thailand does not recognize the authority of the International Court of Justice (ICJ). The Prime Minister insists that discussions should focus solely on problematic areas without expanding the issues further.

According to Thai News Agency, Ms. Paethongtarn Shinawatra, Prime Minister, communicated this stance through a social media post. She stated that the discussion involved the Minister of Foreign Affairs, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and Deputy Prime Minister Mr. Phumtham Vejjayachai, who is closely monitoring the situation in Ubon Ratchathani Province to assess the overall scenario.

The Thai government emphasizes resolving issues peacefully while respecting the sovereignty and territory of each nation. In response to possible Cambodian proposals for the ICJ’s involvement, the Thai government reiterated its longstanding position of not recognizing the ICJ’s jurisdiction in disputes since 1960. The Prime Minister stressed that conflicts should be addressed within the specific areas where they arise, without expanding them.

Thailand remains committed to the bilateral discussion mechanism agreed upon by both countries to maintain positive relations between their peoples.
