Thailand and United States Engage in Constructive Import Tariff Negotiations

Bangkok: Negotiating import tariffs with the United States, the atmosphere has improved. Government spokesman reveals that the Thai team negotiated import tax with the United States. The atmosphere is better. They are preparing to adjust the proposal to focus on meeting mutual win-win benefits.

According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Jirayu Huangsap, Government Spokesperson, revealed that Mr. Pichai Chunhavajira, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance, led the Thai delegation to initiate the official negotiation process with the United States. On July 3, 2025, at 9:00 p.m. Thailand time, they met with Mr. Jamieson Greer, United States Trade Representative (USTR), marking the first ministerial discussion between the two countries.

Mr. Pichai stated that the negotiation atmosphere this time was constructive, open, and had satisfactory development. The Thai side received straightforward and useful suggestions from the United States. The Thai delegation will use this feedback to consider making a new proposal
based on mutual benefit. The goal is to accelerate the work to reach a mutual agreement within the specified time frame next week under the principle that the agreement must be ‘practicable, sustainable, and mutually beneficial.’ The United States also thanked Thailand for its enthusiasm in participating in the negotiations.

Mr. Chirayu continued that Deputy Prime Minister Pichai also took this opportunity to meet with policy-level officials of the US government, including the Treasury Department and the Office of the US Trade Representative, as well as discuss with major investors who play an important role in the Thai economy and representatives of the agricultural sector involved in economic cooperation. From listening to the opinions of these three sectors, it was possible to understand the expectations and policy ideas of the US more comprehensively.

‘Today, the national negotiations on important economic issues, especially import tariffs, are very good, but there are still details that need to be disc
ussed in several rounds at several levels. Deputy Prime Minister Pichai, the head of the negotiation team, has confirmed that the results of the first round of discussions at the ministerial level have a good direction, creating positive momentum for the negotiation process. The Thai side, through the government itself, must work harder to achieve success so that Thailand can reduce the impact on exports as much as possible and that Thai exports can continue to be competitive in the US market,’ said Mr. Chirayu.
