Thailand Criticizes Cambodia for Ceasefire Violations Amid UN Conference

New york: Ambassador Cherdchai Chaiwaiwit, Thailand’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, has accused Cambodia of seriously violating a ceasefire agreement. The accusation comes amid Cambodia’s decision to raise its border issues on the international stage, prompting an immediate response from Thailand.

According to Thai News Agency, Ambassador Cherdchai used a Facebook statement to clarify the situation, highlighting that Cambodia had implicated Thailand in the border dispute during a High-Level International Conference on the Peaceful Settlement of the Palestinian Dispute. The conference was attended by Thailand with the aim of supporting a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Ambassador Cherdchai criticized Cambodia for allegedly disseminating distorted information and reiterated the need for both countries to adhere to the ceasefire.

The Thai statement emphasized the importance of the conference, organized to boost international support for resolving the Israeli-Palestinian conflict peacefully. It noted that some delegations had raised irrelevant issues, compelling Thailand to clarify facts to avoid misunderstandings. The statement detailed that a ceasefire agreement was reached on July 28, with the assistance of the Malaysian Prime Minister in his role as ASEAN Chair. However, Thailand claims that after the agreement took effect on July 29, Cambodia resumed cross-border armed conflict, violating the agreement.

Thailand urged its neighboring countries to comply with the ceasefire agreement and expressed its commitment to resolving the issue through existing bilateral mechanisms. Ambassador Cherdchai also highlighted the dire situation in the Middle East, calling for dialogue and renewed efforts to maintain peace and stability. He reiterated Thailand’s support for a two-state solution and emphasized the protection of civilians and the safe delivery of humanitarian assistance.

The Thai representative concluded by urging collective resolve to end the conflict through dialogue and action, emphasizing the shared responsibility for peace in the Middle East.
