Thailand to Close Border Checkpoints Amid Thai-Cambodian Tensions

Bangkok: Thailand is preparing to announce the closure of six Thai-Cambodian border crossings, ten relaxation points, and the Preah Vihear tourist spot in response to escalating tensions after Cambodia promoted a nationalist movement urging citizens not to purchase Thai products.

According to Thai News Agency, the situation intensified after a clash between Thai and Cambodian soldiers in the Chong Bok area, Ubon Ratchathani Province, resulted in the deaths of two Cambodian soldiers and injuries to several others. This incident has sparked a social media campaign in Cambodia to boycott Thai products, raising concerns about potential conflicts between people from the two countries.

Thai security agencies are on high alert, focusing on the safety of citizens along the border who engage in cross-border business. An urgent meeting has been called to implement the closure of all border checkpoints along the Thai-Cambodian border, which includes six permanent crossings: Chong Sangam in Sisaket Province, Chong Chom in Surin Province, Ban Khlong Luek in Sa Kaeo Province, Ban Laem and Ban Pakkat in Ratchaburi Province, and Ban Hat Lek in Trat Province.

Additionally, ten relaxation points are set to be closed, including Chong An Ma in Ubon Ratchathani Province, Ban Ta Phraya and Ban Nong Plue in Sa Kaeo Province, Ban Khao Din in Sa Kaeo Province, Ban Sap Tari in Chanthaburi Province, Ban Bueng Chanang Lang and Ban Suan Som in Chanthaburi Province, Ban Muen Dan and Ban Chomong in Trat Province, and Chong Sai Taku in Buriram Province. The closure also extends to tourist routes such as Khao Phra Wihan in Sisaket Province and relaxation points in Muang Thom, Surin Province.
