Nakhon ratchasima: Former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra recently took part in a significant religious ceremony at Wat Ban Rai, where he presided over the united phaapaa ceremony and the casting of a brass base for the world’s largest Luang Por Khun statue. The event, held in Kut Phiman Subdistrict, Dan Khun Thot District, was attended by key political figures and local leaders.
According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Thaksin was warmly received by supporters upon his arrival in a Rolls-Royce, where he was greeted with cheers and floral tributes. Among those present were Mr. Suwat Liptapanlop, Advisor to the Chart Pattana Party, and several ministers and MPs, including Mr. Prasert Chantarawongthong and Ms. Sudawan Wangsupakitchkosol, who joined in the merit-making activities.
During the event, Thaksin paid homage to the Buddha image and the statue of Luang Por Khun. He also interacted with Luang Por Khun’s grandson, offering encouragement and reminiscing about past visits to the temple. The ceremony included a unique moment where Thaksin rode a volunteer sidecar to the ceremony grounds, a first-time experience for him.
Thaksin expressed his happiness at being able to participate in the event after more than 20 years, sharing his admiration for Luang Por Koon’s dedication to Dhamma. He emphasized the importance of maintaining faith in Buddhism despite recent controversies and highlighted Luang Por Koon as an exemplary monk.
The former Prime Minister reiterated his commitment to supporting Buddhism and urged the Thai community to forgive past incidents involving monks. He highlighted the significance of Dhamma in people’s lives and encouraged Buddhists to continue practicing and spreading the teachings of the Lord Buddha.
The ceremony was marked by signs and messages of support for Thaksin from attendees, reflecting the strong following he continues to hold among the people. The event underscored his ongoing influence and dedication to religious and cultural causes in Thailand.
