Thaksin’s Sentence Unlikely to Impact Pheu Thai Party, Says Promphong

Bangkok: Promphong Nopparit has asserted that the recent sentencing of Thaksin Shinawatra will not detrimentally affect the Pheu Thai Party. He expressed confidence in Paetongtarn Shinawatra’s capability to lead the party in upcoming elections and restore public trust. He also condemned certain political groups and online trolls for disseminating defamatory content about Thaksin, labeling such actions as potentially illegal.

According to Thai News Agency, former Pheu Thai Party spokesman Promphong Nopparit reported that the Supreme Court’s Criminal Division for Holders of Political Positions sentenced ex-Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra to a one-year prison term on September 9th, stemming from his hospital stay at Police General Hospital. Despite this, Promphong highlighted that many in society empathize with Thaksin, respecting his decision to return to Thailand and face the legal consequences without attempting to flee. However, he criticized a minority of political adversaries and online critics for mocking and demeaning Thaksin, urging them to desist from such illegal activities.

Promphong emphasized that Thaksin, considered the spiritual leader of the Pheu Thai Party, remains in high spirits despite the legal challenges, and this has not affected the party’s morale. He believes that overcoming this crisis will foster love, unity, and determination within the party to achieve new political objectives. Promphong expressed confidence that the party’s MPs and members will remain courageous, with Ms. Paetongtarn Shinawatra embodying her father’s resilience and readiness to work with party leaders to strengthen Pheu Thai, regain public trust, and prepare for the forthcoming elections.

Promphong further noted that while some individuals might view this situation as a setback for the Pheu Thai Party, he sees it as an opportunity to bolster unity and readiness for future political endeavors. He dismissed accusations that Thaksin is receiving preferential treatment, asserting that the Department of Corrections treats all inmates equally. He urged those spreading hate and misinformation online to cease, as such actions harm the country’s progress. “Thailand has endured enough turmoil. It’s time for us to advance with compassion and forgiveness,” concluded Promphong.
