Tourism Minister Clarifies Fireworks Policy for Festivals Amid Concerns

Bangkok: The Minister of Tourism and Sports has clarified that fireworks will be allowed during the Loy Krathong, New Year, and Songkran celebrations, but the tone of these displays must be adjusted to ensure appropriateness. He addressed concerns over the potential cancellation of these events, dismissing them as misguided, and emphasized that all decisions are made with careful consideration.

According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Atthakorn Sirilathayakorn, the Minister of Tourism and Sports, elaborated on the organization of the Loy Krathong Festival in 2025. He stated that while a clear policy has been established, further discussions on the details are needed, and the process is being expedited. He reassured that the SEA Games will proceed as planned, maintaining readiness and internationally recognized standards. The Ministry has communicated its policy on organizing festivals multiple times, emphasizing cooperation with the private sector to adjust policies without imposing strict restrictions. For government-owned events, sponsors must negotiate terms, with minimal impact on both Thai and international tourism.

Addressing political implications, Mr. Atthakorn suggested that connections made between the issue and politics might stem from ill will. He stressed the importance of correctness and appropriateness over following trends, believing that the majority of the public will understand the decisions made by government officials and the Ministry. He confirmed that next year’s New Year and Songkran celebrations will be as grand as previous years, provided they are organized appropriately. While efforts are being made to reduce excessive festivities, Mr. Atthakorn noted that international tourists expect a vibrant atmosphere and cultural immersion, which are integral to Thai tourism. Fireworks will be permitted, but their intensity and lighting will be assessed on a case-by-case basis. For events requiring fireworks, smaller, focused displays are encouraged, with the possibility of adapting the format to a royal celebration left to event organizers.
