Tropical Storm Wipha Causes Travel Disruptions Across Thailand

Bangkok: The Ministry of Transport has issued a comprehensive report on the travel disruptions caused by Tropical Storm Wipha in northern, northeastern, and central regions of Thailand. Mr. Suriya Juangroongruangkit, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Transport, expressed concern for the public affected by these disruptions and has directed all transportation agencies to implement stringent safety measures across all modes of transport, including land, water, rail, and air. According to Thai News Agency, the Department of Highways reported that 43 routes across five provinces-Chiang Rai, Nan, Phayao, Phrae, and Tak-are affected, with 29 routes remaining passable and 14 routes impassable. The Department of Rural Roads noted similar issues with 20 routes in six provinces, half of which are impassable. The Transport Company Limited (BKS) has temporarily suspended two bus routes: Bangkok - Thung Chang and Bangkok - Nan. Passengers are offered refunds or the option to postpone their trips. BKS is actively mo nitoring the situation and will provide updates as they become available. The State Railway of Thailand (SRT) reported that the storm has impacted sections of the double-track railway construction project, particularly in areas involving railway bridges and drainage systems. Work has been paused to ensure the safety of personnel and structures. Officials have been deployed to monitor these sites around the clock. Nan Nakhon Airport remains operational, although flight times may vary due to ongoing weather conditions. Travelers are advised to plan ahead due to potential flash floods and traffic congestion in the area. The airport has also taken preventive measures to mitigate flooding risks. Don Mueang Airport has implemented measures to handle delayed flights, including real-time flight status updates and management of the baggage carousel to prevent overcrowding. Additional staff are on hand to assist passengers and maintain security. The Civil Aviation Authority of Thailand (CAAT) urges passengers to st ay informed about flight statuses, as delays and cancellations may occur. Passengers affected by such disruptions are entitled to assistance, including flight changes or ticket refunds.
