Bangkok: Former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra shared insights into the recent negotiations with former U.S. President Donald Trump regarding tariffs, stating that the discussions proceeded smoothly without any issues related to security or naval bases. He emphasized that the agreements reached were favorable for both parties involved, although the exact reduction in tariffs remains uncertain.
According to Thai News Agency, Thaksin described the negotiation process as having undergone positive adjustments, with minimal objections to the proposals. When questioned about the potential for tariff reductions comparable to those achieved by Vietnam, Thaksin suggested that the outcomes for ASEAN might align similarly.
Addressing speculation from various agencies that the tariff reductions could range between 18-20 percent, Thaksin admitted uncertainty in predicting specific figures. However, he expressed confidence in the mutually beneficial nature of the proposals presented, highlighting the shared advantages for both the United States and Thailand.
In response to concerns about potential security issues, including those related to naval bases, Thaksin firmly denied the presence of any such matters in the negotiations.
