Typhoon Fengchen’s Changing Path Due to Cold Winds from China

Bangkok: Typhoon Fengchen’s trend is changing as cold winds begin to spread to Thailand. The Meteorological Department reported that Tropical Storm Fengchen, over the upper South China Sea, is beginning to change direction due to the influence of a cold air mass spreading from China. The storm will not directly hit Thailand, but rain will still be expected in the Northeast and South.

According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Somkuan Tonjan, Director of the Meteorological Department’s Weather Forecast Division, revealed that Tropical Storm Fengchen, centered over the upper South China Sea, is moving west-north. It is expected to approach southern Hainan Island, China, between October 21 and 23 before being hit by a cold air mass from China, causing the storm to change direction and rapidly weaken. Since the storm is not moving towards Thailand, there is no cause for concern.

In the initial period, a moderately cold air mass from China will begin to spread over northern Thailand, with some thunderstorms possible. After that, rainfall will decrease significantly and the weather will begin to cool, particularly in the northern and upper northeastern regions. Temperatures will continue to drop. Mountain and hilltop peaks are likely to experience cool to cold weather.

At the end of the week, from October 27 to 29, the cold air mass will temporarily weaken, with easterly winds blowing across the area, causing some areas to experience light rain. However, it will still mark the end of the rainy season and the beginning of the cool season in Thailand.

Meanwhile, the southern region, particularly the Gulf of Thailand, will experience increased rainfall. There is a warning for heavy rain and accumulated rainfall in many areas, which could lead to flash floods and landslides. Small boats are advised to stay ashore during periods of strong winds and waves, with waves exceeding 2 meters in thunderstorm areas.

The Meteorological Department advises the public to closely monitor weather forecasts, particularly those living in the southern Gulf of Thailand to watch out for heavy rain. Residents in the northern and northeastern regions should prepare warm clothing and take care of their health during the rapidly dropping temperatures. However, the official declaration of winter in Thailand is pending the completion of all conditions as specified by the Meteorological Department.
