Bangkok: Wachara Petchthong, a former Democrat Party member of parliament, has taken a decisive step in addressing potential connections between energy business groups and Cambodian investment entities linked to call center operations. In an assertive move, he has submitted a formal request to Rangsiman Rome, a party-list MP from the Prachachon Party and Chairman of the House of Representatives’ Committee on State Security, Thai Border Affairs, National Reform, and National Strategy, seeking clarification from key figures in the energy sector.
According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Watchara’s request specifically targets Sarath Ratanavadi, CEO of Gulf Development Public Company Limited, along with executives from various related energy companies. He urges them to provide information to the committee to aid in the ongoing investigation into the operations of call center gangs, which have been deemed a threat to national security. As a former member of the House of Representatives, Mr. Watchara emphasizes the importance of the committee’s efforts to protect Thai citizens from fraudulent activities.
He highlights the need for the committee to examine the alleged money laundering activities of Cambodian capital groups that may be connected to these call center gangs. Mr. Watchara argues that these issues cannot be isolated from the broader context of energy-related benefits, suggesting that insights from energy executives could illuminate the situation and serve the public interest.
Furthermore, Mr. Watchara has raised concerns regarding the persistently high electricity prices in Thailand, questioning the energy sector on this issue. By inviting energy executives to clarify their positions, he aims to uncover potential factors affecting pricing and ensure transparency and accountability in the sector.
