Bangkok: Wirote Lakkhanaadisorn, a party-list MP and deputy leader of the People’s Party, has proposed that ambassadors be taken to see the autopsy results of victims allegedly shot by Cambodian forces. He insists that the evidence clearly shows that civilians were targeted in the ongoing conflict. Wirote emphasized the importance of protecting civilian lives, warning against being misled by what he describes as a staged incident orchestrated by Cambodia.
According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Wirote, who also serves as chairman of the House of Representatives Military Affairs Committee, addressed the Cambodian occupation and the circulating photographs of the Prasat Ta Kwai area. He suggested that military officials should handle the matter to protect Thailand’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. He also stressed the need for the government to be cautious about information spread on social media, which might be part of Cambodia’s alleged plan.
Mr. Wirote criticized Cambodia’s invitation to ambassadors and international organizations to visit the area, asserting that the situation had been premeditated. He urged the Thai government to lead international communication efforts, warning that a slow response would leave Thailand lagging behind. He reiterated the importance of not falling into traps set by Cambodia and maintaining respect for human rights principles.
Addressing concerns about potential violations of the Geneva Conventions, particularly regarding Sapphasitthiprasong Hospital’s treatment of Cambodians, Mr. Wirote assured that the hospital maintains human rights principles and that the issue was one of efficiency. He emphasized the importance of avoiding actions that could escalate into racial hatred.
Mr. Wirote acknowledged the criticism he faces but stressed the necessity of protecting national interests and sovereignty. He warned against ignoring global perspectives and emphasized the need for Thailand to maintain its standing on the world stage. He called for balanced international relations, especially with superpowers, and urged the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the National Security Council to take a more active role.
He used an analogy to describe the situation, comparing it to a scenario where a victim becomes the accused due to a lack of proactive communication. He stressed the importance of adhering to international law and human rights principles, with clear evidence collection to support Thailand’s position.
Finally, Mr. Wirote recommended that foreign military attaches be invited to view scientific evidence, such as X-rays or autopsy results, to substantiate claims that Cambodian forces targeted Thai civilians. He reiterated that while Cambodia may stage displays of wreckage, the loss of civilian lives should remain the focal point of any international discussion.
