Bangkok Airways Commits to Sustainable Aviation Fuel for Commercial Flights

Bangkok: Bangkok Airways has officially announced the use of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) on commercial flights starting from July 1, 2025. The initiative is part of the airline's Low Carbon Skies campaign, which aims to reduce carbon dioxide emissions and promote Thailand's green aviation industry.

According to Thai News Agency, Captain Puttipong Prasarttong-Osoth, President of Bangkok Airways, emphasized that the introduction of SAF on commercial flights marks a significant step towards an environmentally friendly aviation future. This move aligns with the airline's goal of achieving Net Zero Carbon Emissions, a core component of its sustainability policy. Since 2024, Bangkok Airways has been using SAF on pilot flights from Samui to Bangkok. The airline plans to extend SAF usage to commercial flights from Bangkok (Suvarnabhumi) to international destinations, including Phnom Penh, Siem Reap, Luang Prabang, and the Maldives.

The SAF used will be a blend of 1% SAF and 99% Jet A-1 fuel, expected to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by approximately 128 kilograms per flight. As a leading regional airline, Bangkok Airways is dedicated to enhancing service quality while ensuring sustainable growth. The airline's commitment to the environment is part of its broader mission to deliver a responsible travel experience for passengers and contribute to the sustainable advancement of Thailand's aviation industry.

Bangkok Airways is working towards becoming a 'Sustainable Airline' by implementing the ESG concept across all business processes. The airline focuses on climate change management, waste management, efficient resource utilization, and alternative energy. It has introduced measures for efficient aviation fuel utilization, prepared carbon footprint reports, expanded waste upcycling initiatives, and encouraged stakeholder participation in environmentally friendly activities. Notably, the Love Earth, Save Earth project, now in its eighth year, involved planting coconuts on Koh Samui.
