Bangkok: Bhumtham Wechayachai, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of the Interior, has announced his intention to visit former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, who is currently imprisoned at Klong Prem Prison. Bhumtham expressed his view that Thaksin has not committed any wrongdoing and praised him as a champion of democracy.
According to Thai News Agency, Bhumtham questioned the arrangements concerning the timeframe and visitors for Thaksin, stating that no concrete discussions have occurred yet. He expressed his belief that Thaksin has been wrongfully accused and that the government was established through force, leading to an informal governance structure. Bhumtham is deeply moved by Thaksin’s situation, particularly after seeing him in prison attire, and regards him as a symbol of democratic resilience.
Bhumtham described Thaksin as a fighter, noting his decision to return to the country despite having the option to remain abroad without hardship. This choice, Bhumtham argues, reflects Thaksin’s sense of responsibility toward his supporters. He emphasized that Thaksin’s actions will eventually be vindicated.
Addressing concerns about the potential impact of Thaksin’s situation on the Pheu Thai Party, Bhumtham stated that public reactions would vary, with some expressing sympathy and others possibly offering criticism. He reassured that the Pheu Thai Party will continue to grow and maintain its voter base without being influenced by external pressures, such as political dissenters. Bhumtham concluded by rallying party members to continue their efforts to restore the party’s prominence.
