Cambodian Navy Conducts Live-Fire Exercise After Two-Year Hiatus

Ream Base: “Cambodian Navy” practiced live-fire at Ream Base, joining Chinese warships opposite Koh Kood after a two-year hiatus, showing off their power.

According to Thai News Agency, on June 5, 2015, a news report from the Maritime Security Agency revealed that Vice Admiral Tea Sokha, Commander-in-Chief of the Royal Cambodian Navy, announced a naval exercise with live-fire practice scheduled from June 11-13, 2015. The exercise is set to take place in the area of Pulau Wai and Tang islands, which are located near Preah Sihanouk Island. The Royal Cambodian Navy issued an announcement on June 3, 2015, advising the public and fishermen to remain cautious. The announcement specifically cautioned against panic upon hearing gunshots and encountering strong waves, and advised avoiding shipping routes or fishing in the designated areas during the exercise period.

Reporters indicated that the exercise is expected to include participation from Chinese warships, with drills simulating the scenario of an intruder entering Cambodian waters as part of the naval strategy plan. The exercise marks a significant event, as the Cambodian Navy had not conducted live-fire exercises for two years. It is anticipated that this exercise continues the momentum of the Golden Dragon exercise, during which two Chinese warships have been stationed at the Ream Naval Base since mid-2024, actively engaging in exercises within Cambodian maritime areas.

This exercise serves as a demonstration of the Royal Cambodian Navy’s strength and readiness to support the Royal Cambodian Government. The government has consistently advocated for all parties to exhibit patriotism. Moreover, the exercise underscores the Royal Cambodian Navy’s preparedness and ongoing development of its maritime capabilities for the benefit of its citizens.
