Cambodian Protesters Accused of Provocation at Thai Border

Bangkok: The Royal Thai Army has accused Cambodia of violating a ceasefire agreement by orchestrating provocative protests at Ban Nong Chan. The Burapha Force, along with riot police, stands ready to defend national sovereignty and prevent illegal activities.

According to Thai News Agency, a report from the First Army Area Operations Center detailed that approximately 150 Cambodian citizens gathered near Boundary Marker 46 in Ban Nong Chan, Khok Sung District, Sa Kaeo Province. This area remains under dispute, and the protesters expressed dissatisfaction with the current situation. Some individuals at the protest were observed carrying sticks as weapons and were identified as leaders due to their use of personal radios. Additionally, Cambodian soldiers were reportedly present, observing and participating in the protest.

In response to the incident, the 1st Army Area Operations Center, led by the Burapha Force, has deployed personnel alongside the crowd control unit of the Sa Kaeo Provincial Police Station. Their goal is to manage the situation and take immediate action if any violations of Thai sovereignty or illegal acts occur.

Army spokesman Major General Winthai Suvari disclosed that the Burapha Force reported at 1:30 PM that Cambodia had recruited civilians, both local and from outside the area, to join the protest. These civilians reportedly engaged in provocative gestures directed at Thai soldiers, a move that contravenes the ceasefire agreement reached during recent GBC and RBC meetings.

Major General Suvari emphasized that Cambodia must adhere to all previously agreed-upon regulations and comply with international conventions. The Army, through the First Army Area, is prepared to act within its authority should any Cambodian citizens be found engaging in illegal activities. This stance aims to maintain national sovereignty, prevent territorial invasion, and ensure the safety of Thai citizens residing along the border.
