Bangkok: Dr. Tul Sitthisomwong, a political activist, has submitted a formal request to the President of the Senate, urging the collection of signatures from Senate members to file a petition with the Constitutional Court for the removal of Ms. Paethongtarn Shinawatra from her position as Minister of Culture. This move follows a previous petition to the Constitutional Court regarding Ms. Paethongtarn’s position as Prime Minister, which led to the suspension of her duties starting July 1, 2025.
According to Thai News Agency, Dr. Tul’s letter to the Senate calls for at least 20 signatures to be gathered in order to proceed with the petition to oust Ms. Paethongtarn from her ministerial role. He emphasized that the Constitutional Court is the appropriate mechanism to address concerns over her qualifications, citing issues of honesty and integrity. Dr. Tul argued that the government’s inaction necessitates intervention from the Senate, which has previously demonstrated its capacity to challenge her role as Prime Minister.
Dr. Tul highlighted that the appointment of Ms. Paethongtarn as Minister of Culture raises questions, especially given the ongoing legal and ethical scrutiny. He refuted comparisons to the case of General Prayut Chan-o-cha, who faced temporary suspension over tenure-related concerns but not accusations of dishonesty. Dr. Tul asserted that the current allegations against Ms. Paethongtarn involve different constitutional violations.
Discussing potential outcomes, Dr. Tul noted that the Constitutional Court’s prior decision to suspend the Prime Minister was influenced by perceived ethical lapses and that similar logic might apply in this case. He emphasized that the court’s role is crucial in resolving political disputes and maintaining constitutional integrity.
Dr. Tul also addressed the possibility of Ms. Paethongtarn’s resignation, stating that it would align with democratic processes, allowing for the selection of a new prime minister. He acknowledged that the Pheu Thai Party, from which Ms. Paethongtarn hails, could nominate another candidate, although the opposition’s options remain limited.
Finally, Dr. Tul dismissed concerns over “legal warfare,” describing it as a legitimate tool for public accountability. He urged politicians to focus on their duties, assuring them that adherence to legal and ethical standards would protect them from repercussions. Dr. Tul called on government officials to prioritize their responsibilities to the nation, as promised during their campaigns.
