Phumtham Confident in Paethongtarn’s Resilience Amidst Suspension

Bangkok: Phumtham Vejjayachai, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior, expressed confidence in Prime Minister Paethongtarn Shinawatra’s ability to weather the controversy surrounding her conversation with Hun Sen. Despite her temporary suspension by the Constitutional Court, Phumtham reassured that there are no plans to replace her with Chaikasem Nitisiri and emphasized that the government intends to serve its full term.

According to Thai News Agency, Phumtham commented on the Prime Minister’s strong morale, noting that she has encouraged all ministers to continue their duties. He described her suspension as akin to taking leave while awaiting a clear judicial process. Phumtham highlighted that Paethongtarn remains active in her responsibilities and can attend cabinet meetings as usual. He also confirmed that following the oath-taking ceremony, she will assume the role of Minister of Culture.

When questioned about the Prime Minister’s qualifications and the allegations of dishonesty, Phumtham assured that Chusak Sirinin, Minister to the Prime Minister’s Office, has reviewed all legal aspects. He expressed confidence that there should be no issues, and any remaining doubts can be addressed through the justice process. He affirmed that the Prime Minister’s duties at the Ministry of Culture would not be disrupted regardless of the judicial outcome and urged everyone to continue their work.

Regarding contingency plans for potential political incidents, Phumtham stated that the Pheu Thai Party has procedures in place. He expressed optimism about a positive outcome and discouraged speculation beyond the current situation.

In response to queries about the perceived disparity in legal outcomes between the Bhumjaithai Party and the Pheu Thai Party, Phumtham highlighted the ongoing judicial processes and clarified that each case is being handled appropriately by the relevant authorities.

Phumtham also addressed the recent investigation involving former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra and the Prime Minister’s suspension, stating that he has not yet met with Thaksin. He maintained that no significant issues are anticipated in the Prime Minister’s case.

Finally, Phumtham expressed hope that the government would complete its full term, acknowledging the challenges of addressing immediate problems. He dismissed accusations of selling the nation, questioning who would commit such an act, and reiterated the importance of focusing on substantive issues rather than uncomfortable rhetoric.
