Evacuation of Villagers in the Middle of the Night in Sukhothai Province

Sukhothai: Residents of Eua-Athorn Village in Mueang Sukhothai District were evacuated in the middle of the night after the Yom River flooded them. Meanwhile, in Chiang Rai Province, the Sai River overflowed its banks this morning, causing flash flooding in the Sai Lom Joy Market area in Mae Sai Subdistrict Municipality.

According to Thai News Agency, last night, Bang Kaew rescue workers and soldiers from the Sukhothai Internal Security Operations Command (ISOC) deployed six-wheeled vehicles to evacuate residents and pets in the Eua-Athorn Village in Village No. 9, Pak Kwae Subdistrict, Mueang Sukhothai District, amid darkness. Floodwaters from the Yom River inundated the Wang Hin community in Thani Subdistrict, then surrounded and submerged the village, home to 400 households. The rising water level reached electrical outlets throughout the day, forcing the Provincial Electricity Authority to cut off power to residents’ safety.

The flooding inundated communities as a result of the Yom River’s rising water level, which has overflowed its embankment on the road along the river in Village No. 4, Pak Kwae Subdistrict, Mueang District, as well as along the road along the river behind Wat Pak Kwae in Pak Kwae Subdistrict since yesterday. Despite efforts to block the water with sandbags and big bags, the floodwaters have not been able to withstand the floodwaters. Many homes have been submerged, forcing residents to move their belongings to higher ground. The Yom River has also overflowed onto Highway 101, Charoenwithithong, flooding the road surface by 30 centimeters for over 500 meters. Small vehicles are impassable, forcing the closure of the road.

The Yom River, which has overflowed into several areas of Sukhothai Province, remains stable. The Yom River has overflowed its banks, breaching sandbag barriers and flooding homes in Pak Kwae Subdistrict, Mueang District, Sawankhalok District, Tha Thong Subdistrict, Khlong Krachong Subdistrict, Khlong Yang Subdistrict, and Sri Nakhon District, as well as Khlong Maphlap Subdistrict.

In Mae Sai, Chiang Rai Province, the Sai River suddenly overflowed its banks this morning, flooding the Sai Lom Joy Market in Mae Sai Subdistrict Municipality. This followed overnight rain, causing widespread damage to shops and homes in the surrounding area, particularly in the fresh market and low-lying communities. Military engineers quickly deployed sandbags to block the top of the First Thai-Lao Friendship Bridge to prevent flooding in the community. They also worked to seal leaks in the walls of homes adjacent to the Sai River and pump water out of the area. In the Koh Sai community, leaks in sandbags caused water from the Sai River to overflow into the shrine area and the Mai Lung Khon community, causing water levels in the area to continue to rise.

Mae Sai District Chief Warayut Khombun inspected the situation and ordered the expedited sealing of leaks in the big bag line and the installation of six water pumps to address the situation, from the Sai Lom Joy community to the entire length of Ban Muang Daeng. Meanwhile, the large water level at Ban Chotada is 514.67 meters above mean sea level, exceeding the lowest bank level of 514.40 meters, a significant level. The water level at Bridge 1 is 396.091 meters above mean sea level, with no overflows yet over the bank or embankment. Officials have warned residents in at-risk areas to be vigilant and prepare to move essential belongings to higher ground. Officials are preparing to set up temporary evacuation points in case the situation worsens.
