Flood Warning, Risk of Chemical Pollution

Bangkok: The government warns of flooding and the risk of chemical pollution, advising the public to avoid using untested water. Factories must urgently repair environmental systems. Ms. Sasikarn Wattanachan, Deputy Government Spokesperson, revealed that, given the flooding and mudslides occurring in many areas, the government is concerned about public safety, particularly regarding pollution in natural water sources. Contaminants may exceed the standard level due to waste leaks or leaching from industrial plants. Prolonged flooding, in particular, increases the risk of water pollution, disrupts ecosystems, and impacts public health.

According to Thai News Agency, to prevent dangers from highly polluted water, the government urges citizens to monitor water quality in their areas, avoid direct contact with or consumption of water from natural sources, refrain from using agricultural chemicals during floods, and if they find or suspect that a water source is contaminated, they should immediately report it to the Pollution Control Department hotline at 1650 or the provincial Natural Resources and Environment Office in their area so that the water quality can be tested before use.

The government is also requesting cooperation from all businesses and industrial plants to urgently inspect and improve wastewater treatment systems or environmental management systems that may have been damaged by flooding to prevent chemical leaks into water sources, which could have widespread impacts on the ecosystem and public health.

“The government reaffirms its commitment to protecting the health and safety of the public and is committed to fully addressing environmental issues arising from natural disasters. We will coordinate with all relevant agencies to control risks and sustainably restore people’s quality of life,” said Ms. Sasikarn.
