Bangkok: Deputy Minister of Interior clarified the question to the Senate about disaster warnings in Thailand, confirming that the government has continuously given importance and developed the warning system to notify the public in a timely manner.
According to Thai News Agency, in the Senate meeting chaired by Mr. Mongkol Surassajja, President of the Senate, Lieutenant Commander Wuttipong Phongsuwan inquired about the country’s disaster warning systems. Ms. Thirat Samretwanich, Deputy Minister of Interior, responded on behalf of the Prime Minister, emphasizing that the government has been proactive, especially since the flooding events in Chiang Rai Province. The Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation has initiated the establishment of a National Disaster Warning Center. This center utilizes scientific instruments to monitor water levels and sends notifications through various channels, including warning towers, satellite alerts, SMS, Cell Broadcast systems, social media, and the ‘Tang Rath’ application.
The government stresses the importance of relying on official information to avoid misinformation. Ms. Samretwanich reported that the Cell Broadcast system is more than 80 percent complete. The recent heavy rains demonstrated improved responsiveness due to swift warnings, which helped minimize losses by allowing the public to prepare adequately.
Additionally, the Deputy Minister highlighted ongoing preparations for potential tsunamis. The government conducts daily rehearsals of the warning plans and collaborates with international partners to enhance the effectiveness of the tsunami response strategy.
