Mayoral Candidate Challenges Damnoen Saduak Election Results Citing Voting Irregularities

Bangkok: A mayoral candidate for Damnoen Saduak Subdistrict in Ratchaburi Province has taken a formal step to contest the recent mayoral election results, citing irregularities that suggest the election process was compromised.

According to Thai News Agency, Pol. Lt. Somphot Nokthong-Uthai, the candidate for mayor of Damnoen Saduak Subdistrict Municipality, has lodged a complaint with the Election Commission (EC). He argues that the election held on May 11, 2025, exhibited several discrepancies, particularly at Polling Station 1 in Constituency 2, located at Chotithayakaram Songkhro Kindergarten School. Notably, the Polling Station Committee is alleged to have issued two ballots for the mayoral position to a single eligible voter, which can be verified through the ballot stub signatures. Furthermore, a ballot went missing at the same station, raising suspicions that it might have been misused to favor another candidate.

In his statement, Pol. Lt. Somphot emphasized that these actions have led to an election that lacked integrity and fairness, prompting his objection to the election results.

Pol. Lt. Somphot further disclosed that the objection letter was officially received by the Election Commission on May 23, 2025, under receipt number 6478. He visited the Commission on May 29 to seek clarity on the progress of the investigation into the alleged electoral malpractice. He stressed the importance of identifying who might have benefited from the missing ballot and called for a thorough investigation to ensure justice. Should any wrongdoing be confirmed, he insists that a new election should be conducted following legal procedures.

He questioned the fairness and integrity of the electoral system, stating, “I ask, how can we live if the rules that are used are not pure, fair, unequal and equal? Should we accept this? Therefore, I have come to ask the Election Commission to re-examine for the sake of fairness.”
