Thailand to Continue US Negotiations Despite Court’s Order on Tariffs

Bangkok: The Ministry of Foreign Affairs insists that Thailand will continue negotiations with the United States despite the court’s order to halt the “Trump tariffs”. The Ministry confirms that these discussions are pivotal for the mutual benefit of both nations.

According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Rasme Chaleechan, Assistant Minister of Foreign Affairs, addressed the recent US Trade Court ruling to block tariffs imposed globally by former US President Donald Trump. The court found that the tariffs, justified through an emergency decree, violated the constitutional power allocated to Congress to grant import tariffs. Mr. Rasme acknowledged the court’s decision, stating that he would need to follow developments closely. He emphasized, however, that negotiations between Thailand and the US must continue, with expectations of progress in the near future as discussions remain active.

Thailand, while maintaining a trade surplus with the United States, is not among its largest trading partners like Korea, Japan, China, and India. Nonetheless, the US remains a crucial ally for Thailand. The ongoing negotiations present a strategic opportunity to reassess and adjust economic cooperation for the mutual benefit of both countries.
